It's a very weird experience to be gently arguing with a smart young black guy in sword club and have to be the one to know that traditional values is historically and still often a codeword for racism. I guess good that you don't have to think about that?
At least he's willing to discuss, but it's hard to remain discursive and rational sometimes when it seems like during the week he's reading way too much "both sides / superior intellectual man" internet. I have so much more sympathy now (duh) for the tendency of middle aged people to say "you are dumb and how do I know because when I was your age I was the same dumb" but I didn't believe it then so so far I have resisted the urge. It's karmically appropriate to both have to listen to someone repeating that government should just get out of marriage because it's the proper reasoned solution and remember crying seeing pictures of 80 year old gay couples finally at the courthouse the day they could get married and have my brain explode.
